Lot 90

OEWG has a long history, it was founded 1830 by the blacksmith Leopold Werndl who started a small armory at Steyr in upper Austria, carrying on their father's legacy Leopold's sons Josef and Franz Werndl re-established the armory in 1864. Josef launched Steyr Mannlicher in 1864 with the production of the modern breech-loading rifle system. In 1869 the company was named the Österreichische Waffenfabriksgesellschaft (ÖWG) or (OEWG) which translates to "Austrian State Weapons Manufacturing Company." Amazingly OEWG is still in business today but is now known as "Steyr Arms". The bayonet is marked with what appears to be the Chili Crest of a "star inside a shield." The other side of the blade is marked "OEWG." The bayonet is also marked "B.2137." The scabbard is also included which is marked, "H8892." This has a bright 9-7/8" reverse single-edged blade, square fullered on both sides, terminating with a spear point. It has 2 piece wood slab grips secured to the tang by 2 rivets with bright steel finished pommel with T slot and a push button release. The cross guard has two unique raised rivets, that secure the guard to the tang. Sheet Rolled Blued Steel Scabbard. Model 1912 export bayonet produced by STEYR of Austria to accompany the model 1912 Mauser rifles they produced for Mexico, Chile, and Colombia. This particular example is Chilean marked. The shield with star is the same mark that is used as the center piece of the Chilean crest. The bayonet is also marked with the letters OEWG. This mark is an abbreviation of the STEYR factory name as it is spelled in German. This bayonet was used by the Austro-Hungarian Army. A small number of Chilean contract rifles were in production at Steyr when WWI began and were commandeered along with a small number of Colombian rifles and a large number of Mexican contract pieces. In Austro-Hungarian service, this was known as the model 14.
