Description:

Marked clearly on the obverse ricasso is “U.S. / 1864 / A.G.M.” The reverse ricasso bears the semi-circle address, “C. Roby / W. Chelmsford / Mass.” address. The inspector’s initials “A.G.M.” are unknown at this time. The tight brass hilt retains the original buff leather washer. Black leather grip and double twisted brass wire intact. Three branch brass "D" guard. Manufactured by Christopher Roby Company of West Chelmsford, Mass., this sabre was one of over 48,000 edged weapons produced for the US Ordnance Dept. The 1864 contract issued in July saw 10,000 delivered in that year. It is a fine representative sabre issued to countless Federal cavalrymen during the American Civil War. Nice original steel scabbard that retains its original two ring mounts. It is noted that General George A. Custer carried a Roby Enlisted man's Model 1860 Cavalry Sabre dated 1864 during his wartime service.
