The Strasenburghs of Rochester, New York The Strasenburgh pharmaceutical legacy begins with Robert John Strasenburgh who starts his own drug business in 1886 after dropping out of college and working for a druggist in Rochester. The business, eventually becoming R.J. Strasenburgh Company, enjoyed great success and growth over many years. Following in their fathers footsteps are his sons. Edwin Griffin Strasenburgh eventually becomes president of the company after the death of his father, and changes its name to Strasenburgh Laboratories. In 1960 the company merged with Wallace & Tiernan Incorporated. R.J. Strasenburgh Company. In 1886, Robert became a licensed pharmacist and partnered up with an unknown Rochesterian to open a drug store. Under Roberts strong management skills the company enjoyed prosperity from the beginning. Their production facilities were located in the basement of the store. The products included elixirs, assorted botanical extracts, and chewing gum, which was extremely innovative during that time (Jennings, 1968). In 1894, Robert withdrew from the agreement with the other young man in order to dedicate all of his time to the manufacturing drugs and distributing them to the retail sector (American Biography). Robert then had sole ownership of a store at No. 254 West Avenue on the corner of King Street where he sold a full line of compressed tablets and tablet triturates (Rochester Directory). Roberts company began to grow extensively, and he hired a clerk to sell his products on the road to veterinarians and physicians (Ledger). After a few years of further development Robert hired Hilton F. Snider, a move that turned out to be extremely profitable for the business (American Biography). The two associates built up the enterprise and extensively expanded. In 1899 the company consisted of the original store, a separate laboratory at 263 West Avenue, and a branch store at 418 West Ave (Rochester Directory). In 1901 the firm was incorporated under the laws of New York State and officially became R.J. Strasenburgh Company (American Biography). At that time the company had ten in-plant employees and a single tabletmaking machine. The products included Universal Liniment, Resadermic Ointment, Laxiline Wafers, and Little Jewels (Jennings, 1968). The retail stores were eventually abandoned and the company began to solely focus on manufacturing. In 1912, the company relocated to 195 Exchange Street in Rochester, which gave the company greater 5room for office space and manufacturing plants (R.J. Strasenburgh Moves To Henrietta). In 1912 the R.J. Strasenburgh Company had thirteen employed salesmen who traveled extensively throughout the U.S. (Ledger). The drug and chemical manufacture company eventually controlled a great volume of trade and valuable goods from all sections of the country (American Biography). Mr. Strasenburgh enjoyed high standing as an organizer at the American Surgical Trade Association and the American Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Association where he sat on a variety of committees including legislature, membership prior rights names, workmens compensation, and health insurance (CITE).
