Description:

In the 18th Century the production of textiles was a very important, up incoming industry. Most of the work was carried out in the home and was often combined with farming. There were three main stages to making cloth. carding, spinning and weaving. Carding was usually done by children, This involved using a hand-card that removed and untangled the short fibers from the mass. Hand cards were essentially wooden blocks fitted with handles and covered with short metal spikes, The fibers were worked between the spikes and, by reversing the cards, scrapped off in rolls or cardings. We have a set of these old carding combs here folks. These early "Old Whittemore" carding combs have an interesting history. Their namesake, Amos Whittemore was granted a patent for a machine that actually made wool cards in 1797. Museum catalog markings.
