Description:

Hand colored original map. It was a political junket that inspired the 1865 map of the western United States and territories. In the summer of 1865 Samuel Bowles, editor of the Springfield Republican in Massachusetts, traveled across the territories of the United States to California with Speaker of the House of Representatives Schuyler Colfax. Specifically included on the map are the routes the party traveled by stage coach, train and ship. With the exception of the rail routes and potentially new towns, it isn’t apparent that the expedition added any new details to the overall map of the United States. The map is a snap shot in time of the development that had occurred up to 1865. We describe all items to the best of our ability as we are not experts on everything.
