(0 Bids)The Loveleigh Novelty Doll of a Young Boy Eating a Watermelon is a highly collectible vintage handmade character doll created by Itura Rosalein Colley Leigh (famously known as "Miss Love") in Grantville, Georgia. Miss Love crafted these folk-art Black Americana dolls from 1924 until the mid-1950s. Features meticulously hand-painted eyes, distinct hair, and a classic wide, painted "watermelon smile". Early production versions (1920s1930s) are often distinguished by dark red paint outlining the eyes. Constructed using an English walnut for the head, a flexible wire armature body wrapped in fabric or crepe paper, and black felt hands featuring individual cut fingers. Unlike her standard characters (such as "The Preacher" or "Cotton Joe"), this specific variation depicts a young boy holding and eating a large slice of watermelon made from painted papier-mâché or fabric materials. Flat wire legs covered in painted crepe paper, typically ending in flat cardboard or heavy paper feet which originally bore a paper "Loveleigh Novelties" workshop label.
