Description:

This tin found in the attic was used by J.E. Hale at the studio for developing some of his photos. Pyrogallol is the oldest photographic developer, its rapid deposition of silver from silver salts having first been noted in 1832. Alkaline solutions of pyrogallol absorb oxygen efficiently and are used in determining the oxygen content of gas mixtures. Though a popular photographic developing agent in the 19th and early 20th centuries, pyrogallol largely fell out of favor around the 1920s, although it was still used by a few notable photographers including Edward Weston. In those days it had a reputation for erratic and unreliable behavior, due possibly to its propensity for oxidation. In 1851, Ernst Christian Friedrich Schering opened the Grüne Apotheke (Green Pharmacy) in Berlin's Chausseestraße, and in 1871 converted into the name Chemische Fabrik auf Actien (formerly E. Schering). This date is the company's date of incorporation.
