Chief Hollow Horn Bear (Mat?ó Hé?lo?e?a) was a renowned Brulé Lakota (Sioux) leader, diplomat, and orator. He transitioned from a fierce 19th-century warrior into a prominent statesman who fiercely negotiated for Native American treaty rights. Born in 1850 in present-day Nebraska, Hollow Horn Bear was the son of Chief Iron Shell. He engaged in his first combat at just 12 years old and fought in over 30 battles against U.S. encroachment on Lakota lands. Key Conflicts: He participated in major engagements along the Bozeman Trail and fought alongside combined Lakota and Cheyenne forces at the pivotal Battle of the Little Bighorn in 1876.Reservation Police: After the wars, he served as the captain of the U.S. Indian Police force at the Rosebud Reservation in South Dakota. Notably, he arrested his predecessor, Crow Dog, for the murder of Chief Spotted Tail, a landmark case that went to the U.S. Supreme Court (Ex parte Crow Dog).
