Description:

It has not been postmarked. Adolph Selige Publishing Co. (1886 - 1972) Chief Little White Cloud was born George B. Selkirk on July 4, 1885 in a log cabin on the White Earth Indian Reservation. His maternal grandfather, Chief White Cloud, (Wau-Gun-A-Quod) was among the Chippewa's who trekked from Crow Wing near Brainerd (Mn.) to the newly established White Earth Reservation, arriving June 14, 1868. As a child, Selkirk was called "Little White Cloud" as he followed his grandfather about. At a 1939 Council meeting in White Earth, the honorary title of "Chief" was conferred upon Selkirk. Chief Little White Cloud was proud of his Indian ancestry, relating with relish the tales of his mother's people. He was well educated, and contributed essays on Chippewa culture and history to the Detroit Lakes (Mn.) Tribune and Record. Selkirk was also proud of his descent from Scottish nobility through his father. In 1957, Ida Prokop Lee, North Dakota sculptress, chose Selkirk as the model for her bronze bust of a Chippewa tribesman, property of the North Dakota Historical society Museum in Bismarck. In later year (he lived to age 87) the Chief lived in Detroit Lakes where he became familiar sight on the streets, greeting summer visitors. In gestures of good will, he ceremoniously adopted government officials and other visiting dignitaries into the Minnesota Chippewa Tribe.
