Lot 117
The J.E. Stevens William Tell Cast Iron Mechanical Coin Bank is an iconic piece of American toy history. Patented on June 23, 1896, and designed by Russell Frisbie, it was manufactured by the J. & E. Stevens Company in Cromwell, Connecticut. You rotate the young boy's arm to place an apple on top of his head, then cock the launcher on William Tell's rifle backward, which lowers his head to look like he is taking aim. A coin is placed on top of the rifle barrel. When you press down on William Tell's right foot, the rifle "fires" the coin across the base and into the castle tower window. As the coin enters the castle, it strikes a built-in bell and simultaneously knocks the apple off the boy's head. A slot above the rifle stock also allowed users to insert a paper firing cap to make a loud "bang" when triggered.
