Description:

This stein was designed by the founder, Peter Dümler in the 1880's. Pottery or stoneware, relief, pewter lid. Large 3.5 liter, three dimensional design, colorful beer stein/pitcher, made by Dümler & Breiden, showing very early German Hunters with a dog, hunting game in a forest with spears. The first scene shows a bear, the second a horned animal, and the third with the hunters resting and drinking from an animal horn, with a dead animal at their feet. Beautifully designed scenes around the middle, with multi-color design around the rest of the stein. It is numbered 133 on the bottom. The most desirable Dümler & Breiden steins fall into two general categories. The Art (and Politics) of Peter Dümler on Beer Steins: Those pieces that are either signed by Peter Dümler or specifically attributable to him based on subject, style or other factors, particularly those that reflect his intense interest in the history and world standing of the German Empire that had been created during his lifetime, as well as those inspired by the art and design of Germany’s Renaissance period, which also provided the basis for his personal collecting passion. Battling wasn’t the only activity of early Germans that Dümler liked to depict. An excellent example of an early German hunting scene can be found on model No. 133, the 3.5-liter master to a later ¼-liter stein (No. 332), with a side scene that might just as easily be interpreted as warriors heading to battle rather than a hunt, but on the front there’s no doubt that the image is of a serious drinker who’s left the hunt (or the battle) behind.
