Adventurer Who Started to Cuba in a Nine-Foot Skiff Believed to Have Been Drowned. PROVIDENCE, R.I., May 4. - Capt. Thomas Crapo of New Bedford, who recently sailed from this port for Cuba in a 9-foot skiff, probably was lost in yesterday's gale, w hile rounding Point Judith, as his boat was found bottom up to-day by the life savers, off Quonochontaug Beach. The Captain was seen yesterday by the Point Judith life saving crew off that place, apparently all right. in 1877 Captain and Mrs. Crap sailed from New Bedford to England in a 20-foot dory. Capt. Crapo was fifty-eight years old and spent a life of adventure. As master of a vessel he was among the South Sea Islands once when captured by the natives and adopted by the king of a tribe. He joined the American Volunteers in 1896 and conducted religious services aboard a vessel of which he was then master, after the manner of the Volunteers and Salvation Army. He also flew the flag of the Volunteers at his main truck and called his vessel the Volunteer Navy. That vessel was lost, and since that time he has been contemplating the present voyage in a cockleshell to Cuba.
