Description:

This is an antique Buffalo Lithia Water half gallon bottle from between 1878 and 1906. It is a lite green glass. On the front it says 'Buffalo Lithia Water' at the top. Below is a depiction of a lady seated on a bench holding a pitcher. Next to the pitcher is the words 'nature's materia medica'. The company began using this trademark in 1878. Buffalo lithia water was a popular mineral water sold from the 1870's up to 1906. It came from Mecklenberg County, Virginia where a health spa and bottling works grew up around 2 natural mineral water springs. Lithia water refers to a mineral water containing lithium salts. In its heyday this water was billed as a natural cure all. Following the Food and Drug Act of 1906 the water was rebranded as 'Buffalo Lithia Springs Water'. This was because testing showed the water did not contain measurable levels of lithium. The rebranding was an attempt to circumvent the truth in advertising part of the 1906 law. Subsequently the company went through multiple name changes as they butted heads with the food and drug administration over the years. The bottling works finally went out of business in the early 1940's.
