Elaborate painted graphics and lettering highlighting the safe's patent details, alongside illustrated gold medals showcasing the company's historical exhibition awards. The "New" Patent Era: Safes manufactured immediately after December 1871 featured these specific wooden rear panels. They served a dual purpose: providing an interior barrier for the locking mechanics and acting as highly visible promotional signage inside the safe. Because the panel features the explicit December 1871 patent text alongside intact gold medal lithographs, it commands high interest as antique industrial advertising folk art. The word "Paris" on your December 1871 panel refers to the Paris Exposition Universelle (World's Fair), where Herring & Co. won a prestigious international award for their fireproof and burglar-proof safes. 1878 Paris Exposition.
