Description:

Antique Salt Glazed Stoneware One Gallon Jug made by Albert O. Whittemore in Havana, New York. One gallon side unusual soft shoulder form. There is a sturdy strap handle. In the years just after the Civil War. A. O. Whittemore bought the kiln in Havana in 1862 after the pottery had burned and H. M. Whitman was forced out of business. Whittemore was an astute businessman, who had moved to Havana from Queens County N.Y. and rebuilt the pottery and began making stoneware there. The pottery was known as Schuyler Stoneware Works as it resided in Schuyler County. Havana which is now called Montour Falls, once an Indian trading post, is not far from the county seat, Watkins Glen. Just a beautiful and historical part of New York State, Schuyler County is one of the least populated and unspoiled places to visit in N.Y. A.O. Whittemore was an entrepreneur and not only owned the pottery but also owned an iron foundry, a second kiln in Elmira and a working farm. Engaged by some artist prints of the Italian countryside he had seen, Whittemore built, what was by all accounts, an authentic Italian Villa on a mount overlooking Havana. There are local stories of him strolling the streets of Havana dressed in European gentleman's dress of the time, generously helping the poor and indigent. In 1893 a second fire at the pottery in Havana ended it all financially and he lived out his days running a lumber yard in town. Even in his reduced financial state, he managed to help an ex-slave who came into town without means, reached out and housing him in a make do shack on the end of the property and employing him properly until the end of his life.
