Lot 159

Filled with original documents, papers, recipes and a ledger it supports the name written on the wallet to be Boston Merchant William Perkins. Mr. Perkins had three sons that graduated from Harvard and two served in the Civil War. One with the 24th Mass. Infantry who was K.I.A. At Morris Island, South Carolina in 1863 and another son who served in both the 2nd and 44th Mass Infantry. Among the papers is one particularly interesting document that says This is written with the toes by a man born without arms, (King Salern ?) There are numerous hand written recipes as well as a printed sheet of many other recipes! A portion of a ledger with many names and dates beginning in the 1840s until 1870s. Further research is warranted especially of the numerous names on the ledger. The leather itself is excellent considering the age and is soft and supple. Some of the stitching has become separated in several spots and theres an old minor cut at the end of the strap but stable. A great example of a TRUE civil War era item with great accompanying documents! Some of the papers included are *Ledger with 20 names beginning in 1847 *Civil War era flyer 17 valuable Recipes *Recipe for Salt Rheaum ointment * Mrs. Perkins medicine and directions written on a piece of paper with a Super Albion Mills watermark *A request to Mr. Perkins Sir please let the bearer have three dollars out of your grocery.
