(2 Bids)Thomas Barnum Squire owned the Waterloo house on the corner of Jackson Street and Taylor Street in 1881 that was built by his brother Howell Squire. Thomas Squire served in the Civil War in Co. E. of the 12th Wisconsin Infantry. Thomas remodeled the house into a hotel and when the building was ready for the public Mr. and Mrs. Squire gave a public reception imposing upon his guests the choice of a name for the new hotel. It was then named the Squire House. At this same time Mr. Squire ran a racing stable on the villages south side. The listing Squires Hotel, T. B. Squire proprietor was listed in the 1888 Gazetteer. His hotel was conveniently located just a half block from the railroad depot. After his retirement Mr. Squires moved to Madison and died in 1918. The hotel was one of the grandest structures of the later nineteenth century in Waterloo.
