This is the work of Julius Norton and his cousin, Edward Norton who worked in Bennington using this mark from 1850-1859 (William Ketchum, Jr., American Stoneware, pp, 42). 2 Gallon Stoneware Jug with Elaborate Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "J. & E. Norton Bennington, VT" origin, circa 1855, jug with semi-squared spout, decorated with a large slip-trailed design featuring Swirl Leaves in Exceptional Cobalt Applied with a Slip Cup. Superb detail throughout. Light Cobalt highlights to maker's mark. The decoration is detailed and executed in brilliant cobalt as is expected from Bennington potters at this time!
