(0 Bids)It is signed and titled in pencil by Charles R. Higgins. It is behind glass in a period frame. Charles Higgins was the son of a photographer who learned the fine art of photography from his father. While living in Bath, Maine he joined his father in the photography business and took over the studio upon his father's death, and Higgins business remained in Bath until he died in 1930. Higgins, like most other photographers who sold hand-colored photography, followed the lead of Wallace Nutting. His pictures were tastefully colored, and then mounted within a platemark indentation on a typical beige mat. The title was signed lower left beneath the picture, and either "Higgins", "Chas R Higgins", or "Charles R Higgins" was signed lower right beneath the picture. And in a somewhat more unique style, sometimes the Higgins name was signed above the platemark indentation while the title appeared below the platemark indentation. At his peak Higgins employed fewer than ten people and most picture sales were to either local or nearby residents, or to visiting tourists. Higgins sold both Exterior scenes featuring birches, blossoms, streams, rivers, mountains, etc., and Colonial Interior scenes, typically with women performing traditional household chores, especially around the hearth.
