Seto Sometsuke (underglaze cobalt blue and white porcelain) is a renowned Japanese ceramic tradition celebrated for its soft, painterly brushwork and brilliant white background. Originating in Seto City, Aichi Prefecture, in the early 19th century, it became an international sensation during the Meiji period (18681912), when massive, intricately decorated Seto vases won awards at World's Fairs and heavily influenced the Western Art Nouveau movement. Unlike the more rigid designs of other regions, Seto artists treat porcelain like a canvas, applying a native cobalt-based pigment called gosu with delicate ink-wash techniques to illustrate realistic birds, flowers, and landscapes.
