Lot 161
The Watertown Carriage Co. operated out of Watertown, N.Y., producing horse-drawn carriages, sleighs, and wagons before the widespread adoption of the automobile. Known as "salesman advertising" or "trade mirrors," these items were distributed by traveling salesmen or hung in local general stores, livery stables, and blacksmith shops to promote the carriage company's craftsmanship. Founded in 1879, the Ithaca Sign Works produced advertising specialties including this example of their popular wood framed advertising mirror in a useful universal size. These mirrors were fitted with a hanging loop so as to display the square shape as a diamond or on the diagonal. The paperboard backing panels identified not only the maker, but the date manufactured. $375 $550+ The reverse-painted or silk-screened lettering is fully intact with no flaking. The backing cardboard clearly displays the original Ithaca Sign Works stamp.
