Lot 229
A mignonette carriage clock is a highly collectible, miniature category of the traditional 19th-century portable travel clock. Derived from the French word mignon (meaning small, dainty, or sweet), "mignonette" specifically denotes carriage clocks that stand under 4.25 inches tall with the handle fully raised. They are prized by horologists for packing complex mechanical movements into a remarkably compact footprint. This true mignonette measures between 2.25" and 3" high. Despite the small size, they maintain traditional carriage clock features, including a rectangular brass or gilt case, a hinged carrying handle, a top-mounted glass window to view the platform escapement, and beveled glass panels on all sides. Quality 19th- and early 20th-century examples utilize standard 8-day mechanical movements. High-end versions may even include striking complications, alarms, or Grande Sonnerie repeating mechanisms compressed into the tiny frame. Standard 19th-Century French Timepieces ($800 $1,500): Clean, unsigned late-Victorian French brass mignonettes with original keys and functioning escapements regularly sell in this range on platforms.
