Lot 234
This rarely found Easter lithographed tin is a delight. It dates to the 1920s. It is a hinged lid lunch pail with a swing handle. The tin is salmon colored. The lid has an image of a traffic rabbit stopping an annoyed chick driving his truck full of Easter eggs. The sides are decorated with a wraparound scene of a little redheaded girl sitting beside a basket of Easter eggs and playing with a rabbit who is pulling a wooden cart carrying ducklings to a little blonde haired girl who is helping them into a pond while a mother hen with her chicks teeter-totters beside a very large duck egg watching the ducklings hatch. It is marked Tindeco on the bottom. The Tin Decorating Company of Baltimore MD, or Tindeco, began making tins in 1914. Its factory was the largest tin decorating plant in the world covering seven acres and housing thirty-five lithographic presses. It could produce 4 million tins a day, primarily tobacco, but also candy boxes, cookie and cake tins, medicine tins and talcum powder cans. Many were printed with appealing lithographs so they were often kept long after the original contents were gone. In their second life, they often became storage containers for buttons and sewing tools or held momentos.
