Lot 109
W.S.S. Pictorial News (issued to promote the purchase of War Savings Stamps). Features a photograph of New York Governor Alfred E. Smith accepting a drink of water from members of the Woman's Land Army, who continued to farm agricultural lands while farm hands were away at war. While active production of these posters heavily peaked throughout 1918 and 1919, specific archival items circulated into early 1920 as a transition into new government savings securities. While broad World War I military posters (like Uncle Sam) were printed in the millions, the W.S.S. Pictorial News weekly photographic broadsides had significantly smaller print runs and shorter public lifespans. Authentic pieces from this series typically trade on antiquarian paper sites like Real Old Paper for around $250.
