It is signed on the base and dated 1913. It weighs 28 lbs. A striking depiction of a male and female lion, standing proudly. Retains a rich patina. Paul Herzel (1876-1956) was a German-born artist who grew up along the Mississippi River. He studied at the St. Louis Art School. It was early on that he developed an interest in animals. After a study tour of Europe, he returned to New York, and there spent long hours at the Central Park Zoo studying and sketching animals. He was later employed to paint the backgrounds of the animals' cages at the zoo.
