The 1902 British National Antarctic Expeditionpopularly known as the Discovery Expeditionwas a watershed moment in polar history that launched the Heroic Age of Antarctic Exploration. Commanded by a young Royal Navy Commander, Robert Falcon Scott, the expedition combined massive geographical trailblazing with a rigorous scientific program. In February 1902, the expedition achieved the first-ever aerial flights on the frozen continent. At an inlet named Balloon Bight (now the Bay of Whales), Scott deployed an army-supplied tethered hydrogen balloon named Eva. Scott ascended 250 meters into the sky, followed shortly by Sub-Lieutenant Ernest Shackleton, who captured the world's very first Antarctic aerial photographs.
