Description:

William Ludwell Sheppard, "Prayer Meeting in a Contraband Camp, Washington, 1862", published 1890 in Mary Livermore's "My Story of the War". "Contraband camps were encampments that were established near Union forces during the American Civil War by liberated enslaved people. This prayer meeting portrays its attendees worshipping charismatically. They are fellowshipping, singing, clapping, and dancing with one another perhaps in celebration or, at the very least, in hopes that liberation worldly or heavenly was truly to come.
