Lot 215
Designed by John Hall and manufactured by the J. & E. Stevens Company, this popular antique piggy bank features a portly man in a chair. He represents William "Boss" Tweed, the notoriously corrupt leader of New York Citys Tammany Hall political machine. When a coin is placed in the man's right hand, the weight causes his arm to drop the coin into his vest pocket while his head nods in thanksa literal nod to pocketing bribes and illicit funds. Original 19th-century banks are highly sought after by collectors. Depending on the condition of the original paint and the mechanical function, original banks can be valued between $350 to over $1,000.
