Lithograph printed in color. London: George Newbold, 1860. The color lithograph was executed by Buford Sons, Boston, and bears on its lower right blank margin the blind stamp of the American publisher Richard Bishop of Newport, Rhode Island. On the morning of 17 April 1860 boxing's inaugural "world title" international boxing match took place and, illegal as it may have been, sporting historians on each side of the Atlantic accept that Heenan v Sayers, US v England, in a Hampshire field, was the one and only true beginning the very first of many thousands of "fights of the century". John Carmel Heenan, 25, had made a belligerent name for himself as an "enforcer" in rigged elections in and around the sweatshops of the steamship dockyards at Benicia, San Francisco. Gambling backers and buddies had nominated him as all-American champ to take on England's famed title-holder, the 34-year-old "Brighton Titch" Tom Sayers, the "small, clever little ring general", as the public prints described. The International Contest Between Heenan and Sayers at Farnborough , On the 17th of April 1860 is a hand-colored lithograph after a drawing by the English artist W. L. Walton and published by George Newbold. In 1860 a bare-knuckle fight was illegal and considered very brutal. This fight was the last of its kind and lasted for two hours and twenty minutes with forty two rounds resulting in a draw with each fighter receiving a championship belt and half the prize money. The brutality was so shocking to the crowd of spectators that they broke into the ring which resulted in the draw and a law was passed shortly thereafter that banned bare knuckle fighting forever. An English photographer Frederick William Nichols took photographs of the fight between the American boxer John Heenan and the English boxer Tom Sayers. A London photographic studio, Watkins, actually took more than two hundred and fifty portraits of the spectators. These photographs were used by the lithographer to create a realistic portrait of this historic event.
