Lot 137

This coverlet was made in 1849 by J. Van Ness Palmyra, NY. J. van Ness. Coverlet - 1849 - James Van Ness (American, 1811-1872) United States, New York, Wayne County, Palmyra. Cotton and wool, plain weave double cloth; woven on loom with Jacquard attachment; full loom widths; seamless. Done at home by hand on a Jacquard loom and it reverses to the identical print with different background colors on each side, Red/White, White/Red. The Jacquard loom enabled the amateur loom operator, for the first time, to put in his name and the date on the textile through the use of some sort of primitive punch card system. This sparked a tremendous interest in home textile weaving as it was much easier for the home loomist to use these cards to make the prints. The Ailing Coverlet Museum in Palmyra, New York, has the largest collection of coverlets in the United States. The Ailing Museum preserves the ideals of that era of craftsmanship by saving and showing coverlets produced in America, and in New York. It is situated in Palmyra where James Van Ness and Ira Hadsell wove coverlets. A number of examples of their work are shown in the Museum. One of Van Ness's Palmyra coverlets has at each corner the motto "E Pluribus Unum" in a banner above stars and a shield-bodied eagle. The date on this coverlet is 1849. Another Van Ness coverlet woven of yarn dyed with cochineal was made for Jane E. Hoaglund in 1850. Van Ness and Hadsell were partners from 1848 to 1852, when Van Ness who had first taught Hadsell, turned to farming and sold out to Hadsell, who continued weaving until 1875. Hadsell liked floral patterns and spent time sketching from nature for his designs.
