Lot 188
A highly significant historical map that illustrates the strategic frontier fortifications at the mouth of the Oswego River during the French and Indian War. First published in London's Gentlemans Magazine in 1757, this plan captures the exact military layout just before or during the pivotal Battle of Fort Oswego in August 1756, where French and Native American forces under General Montcalm completely destroyed the British posts. To accompany E.B. O'Callaghan's prominent archival work, Documentary History of the State of New York, the map was re-engraved onto a larger sheet. These historical mid-19th-century prints typically measure exactly 9.5" x 6.5" to the page margins. The map delineates the rival positions at the harbor. Fort Oswego (also known as Fort Chouaguen by the French) sits on the west bank of the river, having been established as a trading post in 1727. Directly across on the east bluff sits Fort Ontario (originally called the "Fort of Six Nations"), built hastily in 1755 to bolster defenses. Many editions of the map also highlight Fort George (or "West Fort"), built further up the highlands to the west to reinforce Fort Oswego. The waterway splitting the forts is labeled as the Onondaga River, which is known today as the Oswego River in upstate New York. In August 1756, Montcalm's forces landed nearby, besieged the complex, and forced a mass British surrender. Over 100 British troops were killed and 1,500 taken prisoner. The French entirely leveled the forts before retreating, leaving the region temporarily under French dominance.
