Description:

Hand Signed by President Lincoln and Secretary of War Edwin M. Stanton. Civil War–dated partly-printed vellum DS as president, one page, June 13, 1864. President Lincoln appoints Horatio N. Buckley as "Additional Paymaster of Volunteers in the service of the United States." Signed at the conclusion in ink by President Abraham Lincoln, and countersigned by Secretary of War Edwin M. Stanton. The blue War Department seal affixed at the upper left remains intact. Abraham Lincoln signed numerous documents appointing "Additional Paymasters" during the Civil War. These appointments, typically countersigned by the Secretary of War Edwin Stanton, authorized individuals to handle the financial disbursements for Union volunteers. These documents are often highly sought-after historical artifacts, reflecting Lincoln's critical role in managing the Union Army's finances. The role of an Additional Paymaster was to ensure that Union soldiers received their pay, a vital aspect of maintaining morale and military effectiveness during the Civil War. They frequently featured patriotic vignettes, such as eagles and military symbols, and were often adorned with the blue paper seal of the War Department. His wife died 13 days after he received this document to be Additional Paymaster (Elizabeth Case and Horatio N. Buckley were married in September 1846, in Franklin, Otsego, New York, United States. They were the parents of at least 2 sons and 1 daughter. She lived in Delhi, Delhi, Delaware, New York, United States for about 10 years. She died on 26 June 1864, in Delhi, Delaware, New York, United States, at the age of 40.
