New York: The Viking Press. It has the unique typographical error found on page 281, line 38. During a final proofreading check, a typesetter mistakenly altered the text to read: "I remember holding the bite of a line..." The original word was supposed to be bight (referring to a loop of rope). This typo is present across the earliest runs and was eventually corrected in later printings. The Copyright Page: Must explicitly state "First published by The Viking Press in September 1952" with absolutely no mention of subsequent printings. The Title Page: Must show the publication year 1952 at the bottom. The Binding: Bound in original lime green/apple green cloth boards with the title stamped in green over a dark brown block on the spine. The First-State Dust Jacket: Features a wrap-around illustration by Elmer Hader. The front inner flap must show the original retail price of $4.50 (it is not price-clipped). The back of the jacket must feature a portrait photograph of John Steinbeck with no reviews or blurbs flanking it. Please ask specific questions on details, condition, and shipping prior to bidding, ALL ITEMS ARE SOLD AS IS, and the bidder will be responsible for payment.
