Lot 157

New York: Limited Editions Club [colophons: printed by the Aldus Printers, under the supervision of Bruce Rogers], 1950. 2 volumes, large folio (18 ½ x 13 ¼ inches) and 16mo (3 ½ x 2 3/8 inches) Titles and text printed in red and black, 2 maps. Publishers red cloth-backed pictorial boards, , the two volumes contained in a single slipcase (as issued). A charming conceit: Gullivers voyage to Lilliput is presented in a suitable miniature volume; the land of the giants is described in a large folio volume. The genius of the designer is to make the two (apparently) very disparate works feel like a set. Each volume numbered 782 , each from an edition limited to 1500 copies. Both initialed by Bruce Rogers, the designer, and arguably the greatest American typographer of the 20th century. One of the most unusual and fascinating editions from Gulliver's Travels and a truly original concept by the famed Limited Editions Club.
