Lot 142

Published by Whittlesey House, New York (1941). Henry Cohen was rabbi in Galveston when the hurricane and resulting flood of September 1900 struck the city, the deadliest natural disaster in U.S. history. Modern historical research shows that Galveston was remarkably integrated between people of Christian and Jewish faith at the time the storm arrived. The integration of the community was a major factor in preventing further loss of life during the storm and in its aftermath. This book provides accounts of Henry Cohen's settling in Galveston as rabbi to the city's Jewish congregation in the 1890s, and his going out of his way to make friends with Catholic priests and Protestant ministers upon arrival. A chapter of the book chronicles his aid during the storm crisis, his alliances with Catholic and Protestant relief, and his important role in the reconstruction of the city. The book is a remarkable testament of an individual who met religious prejudices at various places in Texas and eased tensions by the example of his dignity and humanity.
