(0 Bids)Published by The Blakiston Company, Philadelphia, 1940. This edition was published in a maroon cloth variant. No jacket. The first Blakiston edition of Ernest Hemingway's celebrated novel set during the Spanish Civil War, with this edition being published the same year as the first due to a collaboration with Charles Scribner's Sons. The first Blakiston edition, published the same year as the first edition. Although this novel was originally published by Charles Scribner's Sons, at the time of publication there were wartime paper shortages, leading to some publishing companies collaborating to share resources. Charles Scribner's Sons joined forces with Philadelphia-based company Blakiston, leading to this scarce, wartime edition of 'For Whom The Bell Tolls'. Due to this collaboration, The Blakiston Company printing could use the original first edition design and was allowed to be published the same year. 'For Whom The Bell Tolls' tells the story of Robert Jordan, a young American volunteer attached to a Republican guerilla unit during the Spanish Civil War. Hemingway drew on his own experiences as a journalist during the Spanish Civil War for the 'North American Newspaper Alliance'. This work is often regarded as one of Hemingway's best works.
