Description:

Shake ’Em Up! A Practical Handbook of Polite Drinking is a famous Prohibition-era cocktail book published in 1930 by Brewer and Warren, Inc.. Written by Manhattan socialites Virginia Elliott and Phil D. Stong, it provides a highly entertaining, unfiltered look at American hospitality during the "twelfth year of Volstead". The "Bathtub Gin" Controversy: To technically comply with the Volstead Act—which banned printing instructions on how to make alcohol—the authors cheekily called for "non-alcoholic" gin or Scotch in their recipes. However, under the heading "Household Hints" on page 68, they printed a recipe detailing exactly how to mix herbal extracts and pure industrial alcohol to make passable bathtub gin. This landed them in legal trouble with the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, and the recipe was censored or removed in subsequent printings. Because real, high-quality spirits were incredibly scarce in 1930, the recipes heavily relied on heavy juices, ginger ale, and sweeteners to mask the terrible taste of bootleg liquor. While it is a "disaster" of a modern recipe book, it remains one of the most historically accurate records of actual Jazz Age drinking habits.
