Description:

Published by The Century Co, New York, / London: Frederick Warne & Co. 1911. Red Beveled Cloth Boards, with Gold Gilt and Black Decoration and Red & Black Lettering. E. B. White's First Appearance in Print, aged 11: "A Winter Walk". PART II: pp. 579-1152. A popular and much-heralded magazine written for and by children, St. Nicholas is known to have been the first magazine to publish a number of famous authors, including Edna St. Vincent Millay, Stephen Vincent Benet, Eudora Welty, Vita Sackville-West, and F. Scott Fitzgerald (who had contributed a photograph). This volume contains the first published writing by E. B. White, a brief short story entitled "A Winter Walk," which won the "Silver Badge," the magazine's second-highest honor. The story is a snapshot of a cabin-dweller and his dog, who venture out into a forest under fresh snow. It contains some real stunners for an eleven-year-old, though the fact is less surprising when one realizes this is the eleven-year-old who would grow up to write "Charlotte's Web." For example: "All the trees wore a new fur coat, pure white, and the pines were laden with pearl . Squirrels frisked among the branches, chattering because we trespassed on their property." A fantastic keepsake for anyone who loves E. B. White, especially those who admire his talent for humanizing the animal kingdom. May to October 1911.
