Description:

Ben King's Southland Melodies is a posthumously published collection of dialect poetry by Michigan-born poet and humorist Ben King Jr. (1857–1894), released as a first edition in 1911 by Chicago publisher Forbes and Company. The book is notable for its use of an African-American slave vernacular and its heavy, nostalgic illustration by prominent photographers of the era. Ben King was a popular parodist and writer associated with the Chicago Press Club. Though he died in 1894, his poems remained popular in the Midwest for decades. The verses in Southland Melodies are written entirely in the white-authored African-American dialect typical of turn-of-the-century popular literature. The book is heavily illustrated with black-and-white photographs by Essie Collins Matthews and Leigh Richmond Miner. Both were well-known members of the Hampton Camera Club who famously illustrated similar works by dialect poet Paul Laurence Dunbar. Their photographs for this volume present pastoral, sentimentalized images of Southern subjects. 128 pages. Green cloth boards with gilt lettering. Contains black and white illustrations.
