John Lawrence Sullivan (October 15, 1858 - February 2, 1918) was a highly regarded boxer of the late 19th century. He is regarded as the first Heavyweight Champion of gloved boxing (1882-1892) and the last Heavyweight Champion of the bare-knuckle era (when he knocked out Jake Kilrain in round 75 of a scheduled 80-round bout in 1889). He lost his heavyweight title in an 1892 contest against Gentleman Jim Corbett. It was the only professional loss of the Boston Strong Boys career. He retired following 42 bouts 38 wins (32 by knock-out), 1 loss, 2 draws, and 1 no contest. Sullivan also holds the distinction of being the first American fighter to gain national recognition and to earn over $1 million. He was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame as part of its inaugural class in 1990.
