Description:

Engraved & printed by John A Lowell & Co. Boston U.S.A. Lithograph titled "Great $10,000 Match Race Sheephead Bay June 25th, 1890. Salvator & Jenny". This is an engraving by Henry Stull (1851-1913) considered by many to have been the greatest painter of fine race horses in the late 1800's. Many of his paintings are sold by large auction houses for thousands. This particular work is a fine example of his engraving and is being sold including a tiger oak frame, typical of the period. This style is very typical of Henry Stull depicting an intense match between two rival horses with clouds of dust flying and horses in full stride. This is a steel engraving of a very important grudge match race between the challenging new two year old bred by Daniel Swigert of Elmendorf Farm in Lexington, Kentucky . Salvator was sired by Prince Charlie out of Salina and was born in 1886 in California. Salvatore was owned by James Ben Ali Haggin who had made his money in the California Gold Rush and owned the largest horse breeding operation in the world, "Rancho del Paso" near Sacramento. Salvatore was taken to New York for training in New York in 1887 by Haggin's trainer Matthew Byrnes, and the jockey who is pictured in this engraving, George "Snapper" Garrison . His racing career began late because of injuries, however, very early it was evident that Salvatore had great potential because he began finishing very well against some of the best horses of the day. He made his debut against Proctor Knox who had already run six races and placed third. In his next race against Proctor Knox in the Futurity at Coney Island, Salvatore lost by only a half length. The race attracted much attention because it was the richest race in America. Proctor Knox did not race again that season but Salvatore continued and won his next three races. During his three year old season, an intense rivalry developed between Salvatore and Tenny, owned by D. T. Pulsifer and normally ridden by African American jockey, Isaac Murphy, also pictured in the engraving. The next year, the first race in which Salvatore faced Tenny was the 7 the running of the Surban Handicap at Sheepshead Bay. Salvatore won the race but Pulsifer was not happy with the results. He challenged Haggin to a match race and after working out the details, it was decided that it would take place on June 25, 1890 at Sheepshead Bay and the prize was $10,000. For this race, the jockeys were switched, Salvatore ridden by Murphy and Tenny by Garrison. Salvatore won by a nose and both jockeys were unsure of the outcome as they walked back to the start. Henry Stull (1851-1913) was born in Hamilton, Ontario. He was an aspiring actor and he moved to New York City to look for greater opportunities but soon took a job as a staff illustrator to draw theatrical performances and urban scenes. While with the Sporting New Yorker he began to draw horse racing events. His work was gaining prominence and he was hired by The Spirit of the Times where he worked for 14 years. Stull was commissioned by several well known horse breeders: General Warren G. Harding, owner of Belle Meade Farm in Tennesee and tobacco magnate, Pierre Lorrilard who became Mr. Stull's principal patron. Over his lifetime he received many other commissions even including salesman Diamond Jim Brady. We describe all items to the best of our ability as we are not experts on everything.
