Lot 98

FIRST EDITION in original cloth of Grant's important and fascinating memoirs, illustrated throughout with numerous steel engravings, facsimiles, and over forty maps. New York: Charles L. Webster & Co., 1885-86. Octavo, original green cloth with gilt medallions on boards. Two volumes. Engravings and maps throughout text, as well as fold-out facsimiles of the original terms of Lee's surrender (which Grant wrote himself) and of General Buckner's dispatch regarding terms of capitulation, with Grant's reply and Buckner's response surrendering Fort Donelson. The famous memoirs of the leader of the Union army during the American Civil War, including accounts of his boyhood and early career during the Mexican War. Mark Twain can be partially credited for the release of Grant's memoirs; Grant's health was ailing (he soon died of cancer), and Twain encouraged Grant to write them as a way to provide for his family after his death. The books were barely completed before Grant passed away, and were published posthumously. We describe all items to the best of our ability as we are not experts on everything.
