Published by Fergus Printing Company, 1876. Softcover. "The Chicago Historical Society was organized April 24, 1856." Graff 436. Brown was its first president and an authority on the early history of Illinois. After the 1820 Missouri Compromise, Illinois "was the theatre of the second aggressive movement of the Slave Power, in 1823-4." He discusses that contest for the soul of Illinois, which happily emerged united with North and East. The South has been "polluted by the footsteps of the slave." Howes B873.
