Among the Pines; or, South in Secession-Time is an influential 1862 Civil War novel written by James Roberts Gilmore under the pseudonym Edmund Kirke. James Roberts Gilmore was a prominent American businessman, journalist, and author. He frequently wrote under the pen name "Edmund Kirke" to separate his literary and political works from his corporate ventures. The book was published in New York by J.R. Gilmore / Carleton in 1862. It became an instant commercial success during the Civil War, selling tens of thousands of copies within its first year of publication. Written from a strongly pro-Union perspective, the book details life, culture, and political tensions in the American South right as the Southern states passed ordinances of secession. Core.
