Webber, Charles W., author of "Hunter-Naturalist -- Wild Scenes and Wild Hunters," etc. Published by George P. Putnam & Co., New York, 1854. Tissue-protected Chromolithograph frontispiece (The Kentucky Mocking Bird) and 19 other chromolithograph (drawn on stone) plates. The plate of the Indian Girl Swinging shows her bare-breasted. ("In the first edition, she appears, as in the Miller watercolor, bare-breasted. In at least some of the later printings, she has been provided with a blouse, probably in the name of nineteenth-century modesty," explains Ron Tyler, editor, "Alfred Jacob Miller: Artist on the Oregon Trail," 1982, p. 449). Book mainly sought after for the five chromolith plates of Native American scenes by Alfred Jacob Miller (1810-1874), an early American artist in the Rockies. One of only two published works to contain chromolithographs after Miller, considered one of the three great early Western American artists. Miller was a pioneering Baltimore-born artist, who accompanied Sir William Drummond Steward on his hunting journey to the Rocky Mountains. This is one of two works published containing Miller's illustrations. Collated, complete. The title page states that there are twenty-five coloured lithographs. This is misprint and this edition only contains twenty plates, as stated to the illustration leaf. Written by Charles Wilkins Webber, a journalist and explorer based in the United States. Webber also wrote 'Hunter Naturalist, Wild Scenes and Wild Hunders' and regularly contributed to periodicals. A beautiful copy of this ornithological work, with extremely bright plates. Of the five views of American Indian life here, four are "scenes in the camp of the Delawares," according to author Webber, though in fact they are almost certainly based on the artist's sketches of the Snake Indians (related to the Shoshone), in and beyond the Rockies. 347 pp. including "Technical Index."
