Published by Harper and Bros., New York, 1843. First American edition. Octavo. xii, 9-459, xvi, 9-478pp., 65 plates, 1 map. Original textured paper-covered boards with gilt vignette and decorative ruling on covers, gilt ruling, tooling and lettering on spines. Folding frontispiece in each volume. Beautifully illustrated with 120 engravings, including woodblock engravings in text, some of them full page, and 65 copperplate engravings with tissue guards, some of these bound in back to back. ".the most extensive journey ever made by a stranger in that peninsula, and contain the account of visits to forty-four ruined cities, or places in which remains or vestiges of ancient population were found." (Preface). The illustrations feature Mayan temples, pyramids, art, plans, landscapes, etc. Appendices with thermometric observations, population, architecture, the Mayan calendar, etc., and a manuscript written in the Maya language, with English translation, in volume two. Stephens is considered a pivotal figure in rediscovering Mayan civilization. Inspired by Alexander von Humboldt and Juan Galindo Stephens and his traveling companion, the architect and draftsman Frederick Catherwood, undertook a second trip to Yucatan in 1841, visiting a total of 44 Mayan sites with Catherwood providing the drawings. Stephens argued convincingly that Mayans had built the ancient Central American cities.
