As an adolescent, O'Connell shipped out probably as a cabin boy for Australia and New Zealand, and then shipwrecked on the Caroline Islands. Stranded there for five years, he became heavily tattooed and became one with the natives. Rescued, through a circuitous route made it to New York where, due to the tattoos, he was thought of as an outcast. He then became part of P.T. Barnum's circus to become the U.S.'s first tattooed showman.
