It was also an important slave trade center. Signed on the back by J B Toulmin. Toulmin, Hazard & Co. was a commission merchant located in Mobile, Alabama. The firm was run by John Butler Toulmin (1788-1860) and Charles Courtland Hazard (1800-1857). Brother of Harry Toulmin, Secretary of State of Kentucky and first federal judge in Alabama. John B. Toulmin owned various properties in the city of Mobile, including at one time what was known as the "Old Spanish Dwelling," called the oldest house in Mobile (circa 1780) at the time it was demolished for the U.S. Government's insane "Urban Renewal" plan. He died in 1869 in England, although several family trees show him as dying between 2 FEB 1858 AND 10 APR 1860 in Mobile County. Various family trees show his death as 1860 at Spring Hill, Mobile Co., AL., apparently because his name is on the memorial marker at Spring Hill Cemetery. (Montgomery, Alabama) The Daily Confederation, March 30, 1869, p.2: DEATH OF A FORMER CITIZEN.--We regret to hear of the death, on the 3d inst., at Buxton, (England,) of John B. Toulmin, aged seventy-tw0 years. Mr. Toulmin was formerly an active merchant in Mobile, and all our older citizens know how highly esteemed he was.
