Typographia, or the Printers' Instructor: including an account of the Origin of Printing, with Biographical Notices of the Printers of England, from Caxton to the close of the Sixteenth Century: A Series of Ancient and Modern Alphabets, and Domesday Characters: Together with An Elucidation of every Subject connected with the Art. 2 vols. 32mo. Complete with 609 and 653 pages respectively. Bound in original calf boards and new, labeled tan calf bindings. Text is clean and bright. The first volume is devoted to the history of printing and includes biographies, adorned with bibliographical notes, of famous British printers such as Caxton and Wynkyn the Worde. The second volume describes type, composition, letter cases, imposition (including rather unusual formats such as 72mo, 96mo and even "one hundred and twenty-eights"!), exotic alphabets, rules to be observed in a printing house, the construction of a printing press, warehouse work, wages, steam machines, etc. A nice set of this remarkable 1200 + page Illustrated history.
