Description:

A journal, of a young man of Massachusetts, : late a surgeon on board an American privateer, who was captured at sea by the British, in May, eighteen hundred and thirteen, and was confined first, at Melville Island, Halifax, then at Chatham, in England and last at Dartmoor Prison. Boston: Rowe & Hooper, Second Edition. Second edition, published the same year as the first. This is the story of a Massachusetts surgeon captured by the British during the War of 1812 and held in Dartmoor Prison. DAB: "There is every evidence that the book was a first-hand account, written by the doctor of a small merchant ship, but Waterhouse may have edited or even augmented the manuscript." Described as "a novel founded on fact" by S. Austin Allibone in A critical dictionary of English literature, and attributed to Benjamin Waterhouse by Allibone, Shaw, and Wright. However, in his "A journal of a young man of Massachusetts" (Yale journal of biology and medicine, July, 1940), Henry R. Viets attributes authorship to Amos G. Babcock, ship's surgeon on the Enterprise, which sailed from Salem, Mass. in Dec. 1812, with Waterhouse heavily editing the journal for publication Please ask specific questions on details, condition, and shipping prior to bidding, ALL ITEMS ARE SOLD AS IS, and the bidder will be responsible for payment.
